Elon Musk’s Interest in Buying Liverpool FC
Businessman Errol Musk, the father of billionaire Elon Musk, recently confirmed that his son has shown interest in purchasing Liverpool FC. However, he clarified that this does not necessarily mean a deal to acquire an ownership stake in the Premier League club is imminent. Errol Musk’s comments came after a report by British tabloid Sunday Sport, which claimed that Elon Musk was making plans to buy the iconic football club.
In an interview with Times Radio on Tuesday, Errol Musk responded to the question about the potential purchase, stating, “Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to, yes, obviously. Anybody would want to — so would I.” While he acknowledged his son’s interest, Errol Musk made it clear that it was not a confirmed transaction.
Errol also highlighted the familial connection between the Musk family and the city of Liverpool, which could explain Elon’s potential interest in the football club. “Elon’s grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family, so we are attached to Liverpool,” Errol Musk added.
The Potential of Elon Musk as Liverpool’s Majority Owner
Elon Musk’s interest in acquiring Liverpool FC is still uncertain. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, whose net worth is estimated to be $416.8 billion according to Forbes, would certainly have the financial capacity to purchase a majority stake in the club. However, there are questions about the size of the investment he would be willing to make, and whether he would look to fully take over or only acquire a portion of the club.
Despite the speculation surrounding Musk’s interest, there have been no clear indications that Fenway Sports Group, which currently owns Liverpool, is looking to sell the club. Fenway Sports Group, a U.S.-based sports conglomerate, has owned Liverpool since 2010 and previously expressed interest in finding new shareholders in 2022. However, this process concluded with American private equity firm Dynasty acquiring a minority stake in Liverpool in 2023.
Liverpool FC’s Market Value and Ownership Landscape
Liverpool is currently valued at $5.37 billion, according to Forbes, making it the fourth most valuable football club in the world and the 27th most valuable sports team globally. With this impressive market value, any potential ownership change would be a significant event in the world of sports.
While Errol Musk’s comments about Elon Musk’s interest in buying Liverpool FC may have sparked curiosity, it remains to be seen how serious the potential deal is. For now, the future of Liverpool FC under its current ownership seems secure, but the prospect of one of the world’s wealthiest individuals taking an interest in the club is sure to keep fans and analysts alike closely watching the developments.
